Linda Ikeji Defends Giving Her Son Her Surname: Is a Name Really Just a Name?

Nigerian media mogul and blogger Linda Ikeji has responded to critics after being dragged online for giving her son, Jayce, her surname instead of his father's. The drama unfolded after Linda shared a seemingly innocent vacation photo of her six-year-old son alongside his cousin, Ryan Kanu. However, fans quickly zeroed in on the fact that Jayce bears the "Ikeji" surname, sparking a social media frenzy.

Addressing the backlash via her Instagram story, the single mother of one clarified that her son has always been an Ikeji from birth and that there was no recent "name change." She further stated that the choice to retain or change his surname will be up to Jayce when he is older.

With the buzz surrounding this family decision, one can't help but wonder: in a world so obsessed with last names, does it really matter whose name we carry, or is it just another label for people to gossip about?

She wrote:

“Just to be clear. I’ve never ever had to change my son’s surname. He’s been an Ikeji right from when he was born! Where do I have the time or patience to be changing names?

Changing it and keeping his surname (Ikeji) will be up to him when he ages. Food for my Junior colleagues.”

The controversial blogger gave birth to her son in 2018 out of wedlock at the age of 37. Following the birth, she announced his name to the public as Jayce Jeremi.

She had welcomed her son with billionaire businessman Sholaye Jeremi, who she dated on and off for 3 years. The two finally called things quit in 2017 after their relationship deteriorated.

In 2021, Linda took down his surname from her son’s Instagram bio and fully changed his surname from Jeremi to Ikeji before his 3rd birthday.

Sholaye has been rumoured to have not accepted her pregnancy and had never considered being in the boy’s life since his birth, leaving many to conclude he is a deadbeat father and the reason for the change of surname.
