Former Lagos State Police PRO Aliyu Giwa has advised Nigerian couples to avoid adultery because it is a crime that carries a two-year prison sentence.

This was revealed via Aliyu's official Twitter account, which he uses as the Assistant Force Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos and a superintendent in the Nigerian Police Force.

 He tweeted:

“Do you know? Adultery is a crime liable to 2 years imprisonment! The ‘PENAL CODE LAW’ section 387 & 388 state:

387. Adultery by a man

388. Adultery by a Woman

Whoever, being a man/woman subject to any customary law in which extra-marital sexual inter-course is recognised as a criminal offence, has sexual intercourse with a person who is not and whom he knows or has reason to believe is not his wife/husband, such sexual intercourse not amounting to the offence of rape, is guilty of the offence of adultery and shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with a fine or with both.”

The disclosure has, as expected, generated reactions from Twitter users, who took to the comment section to share opinions about the revelation by the police officer.

A Twitter user @Purity_gifts said “All Nigerian men will be in jail now if every Nigerian woman decides to report every adulterous behavior of their husbands. In fact, most will be coming out of jail and going back almost immediately ”

@LarusOye “Tons of culprits can be found in and around the hotel buildings of two minutes distance from most Police barracks. Who will arrest them.. Even sheriffs are culpable ” he opined.

@Anonymos: “And what will be the punishment for rape, if adultery is 3years.Is not in the hands of Government to punish an adulterer, but God’s. If a married man or woman decides to cheat, that’s his/her business with God, how does it concern the Government? There’s freedom of choice for sex as long as they are both adults..let the person cheat, na him body go tell am.”

@Justin: “Well start with Ambode, then mercy aigbe (serial adulteress) then that amen estate gbadamosi ma and Olu of Ibadan’s daughter, then the rest of the population including all your police ogas… when you arrest all the above, at least the roads will be free of traffic sef.”

@Selima: “Penal code only applies in the North.

@Wilfred: “Was looking for this comment cos I was confused. Please someone should inform this quota system policeman that it only applies to the North. Also, it’s under customary law. Don’t mind him, fornicate in peace. Your punishment will come from God.”

@ObiCubans tweeted: “With all due respect sir, So are u telling me 90% of Lagos men and women would be going to prison.”

Twitter user @ChidinmaObasi9 enjoined people to be meticulous before they offend some certain spouses, and tweeted: “Just don’t offend the wrong spouse, because the adultery wey dey go on in Lagos State alone, Sodom and Gomorrah is just child’s play.”
